Book Titles for The Days of Dust and Ash

After the announcement of having sold THE DAYS OF DUST AND ASH a few months back, I’ve been toying around with titles. I’ve been waffling a lot between using  the title for the series name or the first book title or both. I think I’ve settled on using it as the series title and having shorter titles.

The Days of Dust and Ash: Demons Risen
The Days of Dust and Ash: Angels Fallen
The Days of Dust and Ash: A World Made Anew

The books are going to be shorter and punchier than my epic fantasy, and I wanted the titles to reflect that as well. I think these hit the mark, and I’m digging them so far, but you never know. Sometimes the luster fades from titles.

We’ll see, but in the meantime, what do you think? Like them?

Hey Brad, I like your title choices! For me, when books are in a series, especially an epic fantasy series where the characters have to trudge through all kinds of personal/external challenges, we want them to succeed, but we want them to struggle doing it. One of my biggest problems with LOTR is that we see all this crap happen to the characters, and then even before we read book three we can assume from the title that all kind of turns out well. It seems to me that they’d have wanted to draw out the misery for as long as they could after building it up so much, because with a title like that, all the while in the back of my head I was assuring myself that everything would end alright. That in itself is an interesting tactic, but personally I perfer those titles that refer to the story but do not entirely give away the ending, like book five of Eddings’ Belgariad, Enchanters Endgame, we know it ends, but is it good or bad?

Perhaps I’m overthinking it here, but I tend to have trouble making own titles so I often analyze others. Either way, I think Days of Dust and Ash sounds awesome, and I can’t wait to check it out!

(And only 28 days til Of Sand and Malice Made!)

Thanks, Isaac! I was worried about the A WORLD MADE ANEW title, but then I thought, we don’t know just how it’s going to turn out, so I thought it was okay.

Hi Brad, agree with Isaac: titles ought to have a bit bit mystery in them and shouldn’t too much away form the start. So, maybe a little bit tweeking can be done here :)
