Any Day That Gives You Two Book Deals is a Good Day

Well, well, well. Funny how things go sometimes. Most days you wait for publishing news and nothing comes. Sometimes it comes in dribs and drabs. And sometimes it floods. Consider this one of the latter.

I just learned from my agent that Of Sand and Malice Made has sold to both Gollancz in the UK and Droemer Knaur in Germany.

Of Sand and Malice Made-med

Woo hoo! For the UK release, I believe we’re looking at a simultaneous release with the US version from DAW Books this coming September. And for Droemer Knaur, they’re planning to release the ebook concurrent with the German release of Twelve Kings and the print version when Book 2, With Blood Upon the Sand, is released. It’s an interesting strategy, and I hope it results in a boost for the first book in the series over there, and a nice follow-up when WITH BLOOD is released.

For those who aren’t aware, Of Sand and Malice Made is a prequel novel to Twelve Kings in Sharakhai and The Song of the Shattered Sands series as a whole. It’ll be a great companion novel for fans of the series, and a perfect entree for those who want to dip their toes into the universe to see if it’s for them.

Here’s the blurb for it:

Çeda, the heroine of the widely anticipated, just-released novel Twelve Kings in Sharakhai, is the youngest pit fighter in the history of the great desert city of Sharakhai. In this prequel, she has already made her name in the arena as the fearsome, undefeated White Wolf; none but her closest friends and allies know her true identity.

But this all changes when she crosses the path of Rümayesh, an ehrekh, a sadistic creature forged long ago by the god of chaos. The ehrekh are usually desert dwellers, but this one lurks in the dark corners of Sharakhai, toying with and preying on humans. As Rümayesh works to unmask the White Wolf and claim Çeda for her own, Çeda’s struggle becomes a battle for her very soul.

And now I’m going to, I don’t know, throw my cats up into the air! I’m sure they’ll be excited about the news as I am!

Hey Brad, I just finished reading TKiS and I really liked it! I thought you displayed the world very vibrantly and the plot is quite intriguing. It is wierd, because I got your book from the library only a week after I finished writing my own novel, which is coincidentally titled Blood and Sand, and when I saw the review on the back of TKiS that said something like “this blood and sand fueled epic” it made me scratch my head. You pull off a convincing desert civilization very well, and I felt I learned a few things to help improve my own writing:) Thanks, and am looking forward to OSaMM!

Thanks, Isaac. There was recently another book called The Shattered Sands (basically my series name). And you’ll get a kick out of the second book in the series: With Blood Upon the Sand. Glad you enjoyed the book, and I hope you enjoy the new one!

😀 I do have one question though, if you don’t mind. How much blood of the Kings is needed to be able to ascend to Blade Maiden? Like, Ceda is 1/2 King blood, but would someone that’s like 1/12 King blood be able to survive the adichara poison too?

I don’t know that anyone knows, including the Kings. Almost 100% of the time, first daughters (half King’s blood) are the ones taking up the Maiden’s blades. There may in history have been a few of quarter blood, but likely no one with less than that.
