A few thoughts as I wrap up Twelve Kings

I’m just putting the finishing touches on Twelve Kings in Sharakhai. My plan is to turn it in on Monday. But while I’ve been plugging away these past few weeks on this final, pre-copy-edit draft, I’ve had some thoughts.

Working on formal edits is a funny thing. You’re focusing, for a few weeks or so, on all the weaknesses of the story, and it skews your perception. It makes you feel like the entire thing is riddled with errors, that in fact your novel IS MADE OF ERRORS. It’s embarrassing, too, because it feels like you’ve missed SO much stuff. There’s a danger of falling into a funk about the novel. I’m not given to such things, but I can feel my mood darkening as I work, day after day, on those edits, and I can see how others might either fear this step, or be thrown into a depression because of it.

But there’s a silver lining. Once you’re done, you can (one hopes) go back and read a pretty solid manuscript. It’s why having strong feedback and editing is so very crucial to a finished novel. In the words of one editor I know: there’s a lot of B- writing out there. Strong editing is the difference between just ok (or meh) and awesome. And that’s a finer line than it may seem like at first.

It’s also interesting to look back on a book and see just how much help I had along the way. Yes, I did the heavy lifting. But I’ve probably had 40 writers and editors (and my agent) look at this book at one point or another in its life. It is not wholly mine. It is a shared, collaborative project. And that’s kind of cool, actually. And also makes me feel terribly grateful for all the help I’ve had along the way.

I’m rambling. I don’t really have a point here. Just sharing some experiences as I wrap up this novel.

In any case, I’m excited. I’m humbled. I’m grateful. I’m eager to get this book out into the world.

A lot of things are going to be happening over the next few months. I’ll share as many of them as I can!

I’m very curious how much of that very early part of this book a couple of years ago now, that you kindly shared with me, will actually make into the final and finished product.
