By  |  95 Comments

I'm very excited to announce a giveaway in promotion of The Straits of Galahesh, which is now less than a month from release. In order to help spread the word, I, along with Night Shade Books, am running a contest with a top prize of a Kindle Fire and a second prize of a Kindle Touch, plus other books giveaways, including a rare ARC of The Straights of Galahesh! 13 prizes in all!

Read on for the details, click here to enter, and please, spread the word.

What can I win?

One 1st Prize of a Nook Color Tablet or a Kindle Fire! Winner's choice!

One 2nd Prize of a Nook Simple Touch or a Kindle Touch! Winner's choice!

One 3rd Prize of a Signed ARC of The Straits of Galahesh! Note that VERY FEW of these were printed. I have only two, and the other is earmarked for next year's Worldbuilders drive. So this is the one and only ARC that I'll be giving away.

Five 4th Prizes of a SET of SIGNED TRADE PAPERBACK editions of The Winds of Khalakovo and The Straits of Galahesh!

Five 5th Prizes of a SET of the ELECTRONIC editions of The Winds of Khalakovo and The Straits of Galahesh! (Electronic editions can be delivered in epub, mobi, or pdf formats.)

Ok, I'm sold. How do I enter?

By clicking here and filling out the form so I know how many bonus points to give you.

You mean I can get more than one chance to win?

That's right! There are a metric ton (yes, a ton!) of ways to increase your chances of winning.

Here's a list of the bonus points you get (50 possible points in total) by helping to spread the word about The Straits of Galahesh:

Entering the giveaway via the entry form  1 point
Leave a comment on this blog entry  2 points
Read The Winds of Khalakovo? Add a review to Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and/or your blog. (Include link(s) in the giveaway form)  5 points each
Blog about this giveaway (Please send me a link in the giveaway form)  3 points
Tweet about the giveaway (Please add @bbeaulieu to your tweet)  3 points
Facebook about the giveaway (Please add user Bradley P. Beaulieu to your post)  3 points
Google+ about the giveaway (Please add user +Brad Beaulieu to your post)  3 points
Interactive map easter eggs (up to three)  5 points each
Total Possible Points  50 points

Wait a sec. If I review Winds, does it need to be positive?

Absolutely not. I'm only looking to spread the word, and more reviews helps. And if you've already entered a review, by all means, include the link. Those will count too!

Ok, can I just do a rating and not a review?

Not for this contest, no. (Though I'm of course happy to receive any feedback on those sites.)

Where can I see the cool interactive map to find these easter eggs you speak of?

Click here to open the new interactive map for The Lays of Anuskaya. The easter eggs (three of them) are hidden around the map, possibly in a sub-map, possibly on the main map. Click around, explore, have fun, and when you find the easter eggs, they'll give you a code to include in your contest entry submission form. (Please, no spoilers in the comments. Mentions of the Easter Egg locations will be deleted.)

When does the contest start?

Today, March 13th, 2012

When does it end?

On Release Day for The Straits of Galahesh: April 3rd, 2012 at midnight, Eastern Standard Time (GMT -5). Winners will be notified by April 6th, 2012.

How is the winner chosen?

When the contest ends, I will create a spreadsheet with everyone's entries and their point totals. I will then use a random number generator via to choose the winners of the giveaway.

When will I get my loot?

Prizes will be sent out within two weeks of announcing the winners.

Anything else I should know?

This contest is open to the U.S. and Canada only. You must be 18 or older to enter. Only one entry per household.

Not interested in the contest?

Fair enough, but if you have a moment, please spread the word. One of your friends might like to enter!

How do I enter again?

By clicking here and filling out the form so I know how many bonus points to give you.

That's pretty awesome! I'm looking forward to this book, regardless of the giveaway contest.

I'm generally not a fan of these sort of weighted giveaways, but I'll enter this one anyway.

The books sound amazing.  Even if I don't win, they are now on my list of books to read ASAP!!

Oh wow. I was just talking about Winds the other day. Great timing, and I am absolutely in. :)

Ha! Claudie wins the prize for the first Easter Egg found!

Hurray! I got very lucky. This was one of the first places I clicked. 😀 I love the map, by the way.

Thanks! I spent a good bit of time on that, so I’m glad people are enjoying it.

    Yay, contest!

I don’t like weighed contests much either, but I will make an exception.

    • Brad

      March 13, 2012 at 4:24 pm

And Paul is the first person to find TWO Easter Eggs!

  6. Ryan

    March 13, 2012 at 4:54 pm

Great Contest! I’d love to win that ARC!

I just submitted my entry. Rather than posting at amazon, I posted a review at, the big Canadian online
book seller. I hope that is alright.

I love the interactive map. You did a great job on that!

Even if you are not interested in the contest itself, I recommend you check out the interactive map. It has lot’s of cool info about the setting of the book, lot’s of stuff to discover, and a few cool unexpected surprises in addition to the easter eggs!

I’m really looking forward to book two. Winds kept me up late at night reading, and that, to me, is the mark of a great book!

    • Brad

      March 13, 2012 at 4:57 pm

And the first award for all three Easter Eggs found goes to Ryan!

Thanks, Ryan. I put a lot of work into the project. I think it turned out pretty well, if I do say so myself.

Great contest, I’m definitely passing the message along. Sadly I’m not eligible to enter. I really wanted to get my hands on the 4th or 5th prize too.

    • Brad

      March 13, 2012 at 9:09 pm

Thanks for spreading the word anyway, Ken. I really appreciate it.

Sounds like a great opportunity, I’m definitely in! I have been meaning to pick up your books, but have gotten held back by the unread overflow on my shelves. Would love to obtain any version of them, and would absolutely have to move them to the top of the to-read list.

Thanks so much for the great contest and opportunity.

Really enjoyed reading “The Winds of Khalakovo”. It was the first Kindle book I read and it sure hooked me. I’ve been waiting for a sequel and I’m starting to believe that “The Straits of Galahesh” is probably the sequel. If it isn’t I’m still looking forward to reading it.

    • Brad

      March 15, 2012 at 9:07 am

Yes, Straits is the sequel to Winds, the second book in the Lays of Anuskaya trilogy. The third is well over halfway done and is set to come out next April.

Thanks for the kind words! I’m really pleased that you liked Winds.

I haven’t been reading much lately but I have tendonitis in my left hand. I think I’m going to be catching up on by reading these books. They sound wonderful. Can’t wait.

    • Brad

      March 15, 2012 at 6:24 pm

Sorry to hear about the troubles. The good news is e-readers keeping getting smaller and lighter!

  19. Bryce

    March 16, 2012 at 8:49 am

I’m definitely up for this one! I’ve wanted a tablet for a while, and even one of the “consolation” prizes would be more than awesome enough to keep me going.

  20. Rolana

    March 16, 2012 at 11:08 am

This is fun, I’ve already found two of the Easter eggs but that third one is elusive. The books look interesting so I’ll definitely be checking them out.

Interesting giveaway. I only managed to find two of the Easter eggs but had fun looking nice site.

I’m so excited about this contest, how cool! I just downloaded “Winds” two or three days ago, in fact, and can’t wait to read it. I’ve heard great things… Any of these prizes would be a pleasure to win!

By the way, the map is UNBELIEVABLE! What an amazing job. And I found all three Easter Eggs! Woohoo!

  26. Amanda

I actually decided to visit this site after author Karen Miller pimped this out, and I’m kind of excited that I did! The series sounds fascinating – and the map is sweet – so I think I’ll go pick up a copy of Winds of Khalakovo. Contests pay off in more than one way!

    • Amanda

      March 17, 2012 at 11:23 am

Ah, correction – it was Lynn Flewelling, not Karen Miller. Can’t keep track of my favorite authors, apparently!

    • Brad

      March 17, 2012 at 11:59 am

Awesome. Thanks for the leap of faith, Amanda!

Thoroughly enjoyed Winds of Khalakovo, which I found through Barnes & Noble’s Free Fridays offerings last summer. Looking forward to Straits of Galahesh, giveaway or no. Though the giveaway is pretty chouette–thanks for RTing me on Twitter, else I wouldn’t have known about it! :)

  40. Jenny

    March 20, 2012 at 3:37 pm

I am so tempted! My last 24 hours have been pretty much wasted – and wonderful.
Work, wasted. Winds of Khalakovo, wonderful!! Since I read almost a book a day, I regularly sift through Amazon’s freebies. Discovering something of this quality is like finding buried treasure.

I can’t help commenting on your background. It reminds me so much of my eldest son, a high school senior. Given my hundreds of SF&F books, and the fact that he’s an actor, he was probably predestined to get involved in D&D, and like you, gravitated to DM, (Sometimes I get to help in world building! ) Like you, he writes well and has dabbled in fiction. So while his day job is likely to be in the Math/Sciences, it would be fun to imagine is from Montreal. Do you know your Francophone lineage?)

I’d love to help promote your writing. The contest seems fun, a nice break from work, and a little bit like the scavenger hunts I used to love. That may be a giveaway that I’m of a later generation…. Reviews; no problem. Tweets? Facebook? Help! Can I Facebook, etc. from my son’s pages?

I eagerly await book 2. Is there any chance there’s an e-book version in it’s near future? Anyway, great luck with your writing!

    • Brad

      March 20, 2012 at 3:55 pm

Jenny, thanks so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed Winds! The Straits of Galahesh hits the shelves (both physical and virtual) on April 3rd. There will indeed be an e-book version, and it will be available on Kindle, Nook, and EPUB on release day.

My lineage is indeed French Canadian. I wasn’t the family historian (that title goes to my sister), so I can’t say if any of my ancestors lived in Montreal. I like the city a lot, though, so I’ll pretend that they did…

As for promotion, Yes! I’d love reviews anywhere. Amazon is the 400lb gorilla, so it’s always good to get some there, and Goodreads as well. You can certainly share any of my posts you’d like on FB, your page or your son’s.

And thanks so much for the note! It’s really wonderful to hear back from people that have read my work.
